Djemma el-Fina in Arabic means “The gathering place of the departed” This is where in olden times the heads of the executed were put on pikes to be displayed in public. Beyond this grisly name, this public square is the spiritual heart of Morocco. (Like Barton Springs is to Austin) For over 1000 years people from all over Africa have gathered here to buy and sell, slaves, gold, guns, hashish, and anything else under the sun that could be bought or traded. Performers, snake charmers, fortunetellers, dentists, pickpockets, traveling musicians, and tourists from around the world fill the Djemma el-Fina 24 hours a day. At nite it becomes the biggest open-air restaurant in the world.
